My wife works in an industry where a lot of small businesses were wiped out by supply chain collapse following the COVID pandemic, so I've seen what large-scale dieoffs look like.

These tariffs will be worse than that.

I repeat: These tariffs will do greater economic damage and subsequent suffering than a global pandemic that has killed and maimed millions.

Lately, I got addicted to the Royal Game of Ur, so I made myself a little board with game pieces and dice. The brown of the rosettes is actually inlaid into the wood, which didn't work out at all, so the drawings ended up wonky as well. I also had to make two-sided dice because I couldn't manage to make good four-sided ones. They work, but tend to roll away or stack themselves on top of each other. The fake marble of the game pieces needs work too. Making the board from three strips of wood was also a challenge with no experience in woodworking.
All in all, it was more or less an experiment, but it works fine.

@icecolbeveridge Compare the technique of "tewari", from the game of Go, which asks, "Would these moves have been effective if played in a different order?"

(This makes more sense for Go, a game of placement, than for Chess, a game of movement.)

Played 3 new games this month:

1. Back to the future: Back in time -- I love the theme and design, but not sure about the replayability. Might be fine with different players. 7.5/10.

2. ito (it0?) -- simple rules but challenging to get it right! Fun to learn how others think about stuff. Everyone's scale is so different! 8/10.

3. Beacon Patrol -- not bad but nothing too exciting. Having a solo mode is nice though. 6/10.

Finally had my first game of Ark Nova at GOBfest here in #yeg. An excellent game for those who like medium to heavy Euros. A friend was correct when they said there were many paths to winning, which allows you the opportunity to pivot if the cards in hand were betraying your original strategy. I don’t have the kind of gaming group to bring it to the table but I’ll be quick to recommend it to those who enjoy a 3-hour strategy session. #boardgames
