So, I watched #Adolescence on the airplane. I was really impressed with it. The single-shot technique is a little distracting -- I kept looking for tough shots instead of focusing on the story -- but also gives a really human-centred feel to the action across many POV characters. I thought the reveal in the interrogation room was stunning. Owen Cooper's portrayal of Jamie is masterful; hard to believe that a teen actor can reach that deep into the human psyche. Whole cast is great.

It is still remarkable to me that people can’t tell the difference between art being well-made, and being a good guide for public policy.

#Adolescence is well made art. But it is incredibly conservative (e.g. the inherent pessimism about schooling), and we are now having reactionary policymaking based on a piece of fiction and that’s quite silly.

[05:45] Nee, Adolescence gaat niet over sociale media of smartphones

De geweldige serie Adolescence laat heel overtuigend zien dat er geen simpel antwoord is op de vraag – spoiler – hoe het kan dat een 13-jarige jongen een vreselijke moord pleegt. Het is daarom jammer dat de maker in interviews het antwoord zo platslaat, en de discussies erover vooral over smartphones en influencers gaan.
Ik vind óók iets van Adolescence, de Netflix-hit waar iedereen iets van vindt.
De Correspondent en maak meer verhalen mogelijk voorbij de waan van de dag.

Hell yeah, it's good that #Adolescence on Netflix is getting folks talking about how toxic smartphone use is for kids — that shit’s real and it’s wrecking young people’s mental health. We need to be having these convos.

That said, the “one-take” gimmick? Christ. As an editor, lemme tell you — there’s a reason we cut things. Editing exists to make shit better. Doing every episode in one long, unbroken shot might seem edgy, but after the first ep, it just feels like a flex with no purpose. It starts dragging real fast.

Still, worth a watch. If it gets us talking about #cyberbullying, #anxiety, and how we protect kids from the dopamine drip of their goddamn phones, I’m all for it.

Now go touch some grass and talk to a human, ya screen junkies.
