update: here’s the tracks I managed to capture before I restarted the map application — this with the included designed-for-DTV antenna, on a junction box cover “ground plane” inside in a south-facing window.

The purple/pink tracks are high-altitude, the orange /yellow/green is coming and going from YHZ.

I’ve also got feeds going to FlightRadar24, FlightAware, and adsb.fi (and upgraded accounts on the first two!). Tomorrow: antenna tuning, maybe…

Another update on the progress being made by "the big four" alternative ADSB aggregators that have sprung up since #ADSBExchange was sold last week.

The most successful so far appears to be ADSB.fi, which as of 15 minutes ago, was tracking 46% the number of aircraft of ADSBx.

ADSBx has lost roughly 8% of its feeders (9470 to 8693 per the numbers I can find).

A quick update on #ADSBExchange vs heir apparent #ADSBfi

ADSBx is currently tracking 9733 flights to ADSBfi's 3914 (~40%).

ADSBx currently has 8815 feeders, down from ~9470 (@lemonodor grabbed a screenshot with that many, close to peak), a decrease of ~7%. Holes in coverage over CONUS are filling in reasonably well, still a long ways to go globally.

Now feeding to ADSB.fi ✅ And I hear they're already talking about setting up a nonprofit to avoid ADSBx's fate.

I hope the private equity firm behind JetSet enjoys setting money on fire, because they just bought a largely redundant asset in #ADSBExchange judging from how quickly .fi is spinning up.

If there was any hope that their investment would put an end to @elonjet, it was an expensive and futile hope.

Interestingly, tar1090, the open source interface that renders the maps on asdb.fi and #ADSBExchange, spits out the total number of aircraft the system is currently aware of - at this moment, ADSBx has 13861 to adsb.fi's 4731 - to be able to spin something up and get coverage of 34% of the established competitor overnight is pretty damn impressive.

ADSBx sold for 8 million dollars to JetNet.

One would think he could buy his 10K feeders 400 dollars of ADSB hardware to share in the profit & say thank you for building ADSBx to what is is. Would still leave him personally with 4 million, which is still a fsck-load of cash in his pocket.

But somehow, I feel like all the feeder community, the open data community, the open source community are all getting screwed in this.😞

To be clear: If you continue feeding data into #ADSBExchange, you’re signalling “cashing out on the work of thousands of volunteers is an okay thing to do”. It’ll be on you the next time it happens, to some other service.

I mean, except for the guy who’s now a millionaire (and scored a nice job at the buyer, too), other #ADSBx team members are pretty clear on this.
